Online/Remote Learning for Students
Helpful information and strategies for students who are taking courses online or learning remotely.
Plan Time
- Schedule screen time at the most optimal time for you. If you are more fatigued at the end of the day, schedule time in the morning or early afternoon to study and complete assignments.
- Take breaks to give your eyes and mind a chance to rest, recover, and process the information you have been going over. Be sure to step away and set a time to start again.
- Use the Promodoro Method: Set a timer for 25 minutes and concentrate on your task; when the alarm goes off, reset the time for a five minute break. Repeat this cycle four times and then take a longer (20-60 minute) break to recover.
Dictation and Text to Speech
- Dictation software allows you to speak your sentences aloud while the computer types them. Similarly, Text to Speech software reads the screen aloud to you. Both allow you to work while reducing eye-strain.
Consider Using Resources: Some tools and products can be used to reduce fatigue related to screen time. Options can include:
- Blue-Light Screen Overlays
- Tinted Lenses
- Wearing Sunglasses
- Your eye doctor may have additional recommendations and it is always recommended you consult with them before making any adjustments.
Adjust Screen Settings:
- On a PC, check out Night Light
- On a Mac, check out Dark Mode
- Increase your scale settings to enlarge the text that appears on your screen
