Providing Exam Accommodations to your Students
Implement any exam accommodations after receiving an official Student Accessibility Services Letter of Accommodation from the student. The letter will outline the accommodations, including the exam accommodations, that the student is entitled to. Please note that students have the right to determine when and if they want to use their approved accommodations, therefore, students can choose to refrain from using their exam accommodations in a course or use them sporadically.
Students who want to actively utilize their exam accommodations in their course need to make a seat reservation for their exam according to Testing Center policy. Students are required to make their seat reservation for their exam five to seven days before the date of the exam in order to (among other things) trigger automatic notifications to the Instructor.
Please note that we have communicated to students that their syllabus and/or their Instructor should assist them in identifying the dates and times of their exams in order to make their seat reservations properly.
Please note that the Testing Center cannot accommodate same day rescheduling of seat reservations for exams. Same day is defined as less than 24 hours in advance or after 3:45PM on days when the Testing Center is open for business the following day.
Students who choose to use their exam accommodations should utilize the Testing Center unless an alternate location has been initiated by the student and is agreed upon by both the student and the Instructor. If an arrangement is made, the Instructor is responsible to provide the student equivalent exam accommodations as per the student’s Letter of Accommodation.
Understand that students with specific exam accommodations and/or those using assistive technology to take their exams may require alterations to be made in the completion of exams at the discretion of the Testing Center. Alterations do not fundamentally alter the exam, nor the materials allowed for the exam.
For example, students who require an electronic copy of their exam will highlight their answer in the electronic document as opposed to other means of displaying their answer.
Please note that the Testing Center provides a location for students registered with Student Accessibility Services to receive their exam accommodations when the nature of the course and/or the platform/method of exam administration is determined to not be suitable. The Testing Center is unable to provide proctoring services for exams where the exam accommodations are being provided already due to the nature of the course and/or the platform/method of the exam administration.
FOR EXAMPLE:
Your lecture is in person, but the exam will be given online through Blackboard/Brightspace. Since Blackboard/Brightspace has the capabilities to provide the student’s exam accommodations, the student should be afforded the same experience as their classmates and therefore they would not take the exam in the Testing Center.
All online asynchronous courses and most online synchronous courses are examples of this type of course.
